The Mouawad Mondera is a Type IIa diamond, as it is a
D-color diamond. Such diamonds are absolutely colorless as they do not
possess any of the factors that can induce color to diamonds, such as (1)
presence of impurities like nitrogen and boron, (2) plastic deformation of
the crystal, (3) exposure to long periods of natural irradiation. Thus Type
IIa diamonds can be characterized as absolutely pure diamonds with perfectly
formed crystals. However they form only 1-2 % of all naturally occurring
diamonds.
History
Nothing is known about the early history of the diamond,
but the finished stone made it's first appearance on the 16th of November,
2000, at a Christie's auction in Geneva, and after successful bidding was
purchased by Robert Mouawad for 7,160,000 Swiss francs equivalent to about
US $ 5,360,000. Thus Robert Mouawad enriched his impressive collection, with
another top class gem.
The Mondera diamond was set at the
center of a unique bra, an innovative creation, comprising emeralds and
rubies, forming green and pink floral patterns with a total carat weight
of 320 carats. This unique bra was worn by the beautiful model Karolina
Kurkova, and represented a unique and dramatic way of presenting an
exceptional diamond to the world audience.
The interests
of Robert Mouawad, who is a world class jeweler and entrepreneur, goes
beyond the creation of fine jewelry and collection of world famous
historical and modern diamonds. The Mouawad family's contribution of 6.8
million dollars to the Gemological Institute of America (G.I.A.), helped
to bolster the funds of the institute, and provided a much needed boost to
it's activities, including the providing of scholarship to gemologists
from around the world, to study at the G.I.A. campus, in Carlsbad,
California. The campus was named the Robert Mouawad Campus in recognition
of the family's generous donation to the Institute.
In
addition to this Robert Mouawad founded a private museum , in the heart of
downtown Beirut, the capital city of his motherland. This museum has a
unique collection of both ancient and modern jewelry, items of metal work,
Chinese porcelain and carpets. Besides this, it also houses a large
collection of antiquities and Islamic pottery, and books and icons.
The Multifarious interests of Robert Mouawad, besides being a world class
jeweler and entrepreneur, portrays him as an individual endowed with great
human qualities and aesthetic values.
